Shelley Primary School has a Student Services team that works together with students, parents, staff, outside agencies and the wider community to support student well-being and academic progress.
The Deputy Principal manages the Student Services team which includes the School Psychologist, Chaplain, Learning Support Coordinator and School Nurse as well as liaising with outside agencies. The Deputy Principal coordinates case conferences, supports the implementation of programs and ensures effective use and management of these valuable resources.
RISE Program
Schools are dealing with increasing levels of anxiety in our student population. In 2022 we measured student social-emotional wellbeing (SEW). We found that many of our students felt they had trouble making and keeping friends, felt bad for long periods and did not know how to effectively manage their emotions.
We introduced the RISE program to address that data. Built on our Success Ladder, each term we have a different focus where we explicitly teach students the skills for successful cooperation, conversation and conflict resolution.
Each week there is a theme. The theme is introduced by the School Ambassadors on the PA on Monday morning. The theme for the week is consistent across the school as we know a whole school approach works best.
RISE lesson ideas are developed by Shelley staff through analysis of our SEW data and in response to the needs of each cohort.
School Psychologist support
The School Psychologist provides a specialist psychological assessment, intervention and consultation service. The School Psychologist provides support in four main areas:
Behaviour – working with students, parents, school and outside agencies to identify and change target student behaviours
Learning – conducting assessments of students experiencing learning difficulties and/or disabilities at school to support staff to implement appropriate curriculum adjustments for students in order to enhance their learning outcomes
Mental Health and Well-being – provide support for students and staff experiencing mental health and well- being difficulties and assist the school and children to maximise the development of positive mental health and well-being
Student Engagement and Attendance – provide support for students who are in the high risk category of non-attendance.
The Learning Support Coordinator assists to identify, assess, support, monitor and evaluate students’ specific learning needs, in collaboration with other members of the team.
The School Chaplain assists our school community through the provision of support for the personal and social well-being of students and the school community.
The School Nurse works with students, parents and teachers to support the health needs of students. The nurse conducts vision and auditory checks for kindergarten students and offers support to parents on a range of health and well-being issues.
Excellence in Care Plan
Shelley Primary School (SPS) recognises the need to foster skills and attitudes that will meet the demands of our ever-changing world. Students learn the importance of taking responsibility for the choices they make daily which impact academically, physically, emotionally and socially on themselves and others. Learning is enhanced in an environment where staff and students engage in mindful practice, learn to think successfully, feel calm, welcome and included.
Shelley Primary School has adopted a common approach to the development of a happy and healthy school that is geared towards continuous improvement.
