Composite Classes Research

Every year in schools, we group our students as well as we can to match their needs with staff expertise. Some classes are straight classes; others are multi-age or composite classes. While most parents accept this as a reality, many need to be made aware of the research behind composite classes.

The Good Standing Policy, as part of our whole-school behaviour management approach, aims to provide
acknowledgement/recognition to most students who consistently behave and act according to our values. The Good
Standing Policy emphasises the importance of students taking responsibility for the choices they make daily, which
impact academically and socially on themselves and others.

Rationale

Homework is a purposeful out of class learning that seeks to enhance the extent to which children benefit from their education.

Principles

Homework should:

  1. Support the development of the student’s independence as a learner;
  2. Further the partnership between school and home;
  3. Avoid dependence on unreasonable levels of parental assistance or resources that are not readily available to the student;
  4. Be set without impinging on reasonable time for family, recreational, cultural and employment pursuits relevant to the student’s age, development and educational aspirations;
  5. Be balanced across learning areas so as to avoid stress and overload;
  6. Be phased in gradually and consistently as students move through the upper primary years and sustained through the secondary years;
  7. Be consistently applied, monitored and assessed in a whole-school approach that is responsive to individual needs and learning area requirements;
  8. Only be used to facilitate the achievement of learning outcomes;
  9. Form part of a developmental learning program that is responsive to individual needs, clearly relevant, supported by classroom practice and, where appropriate, developed in collaboration with students; and
  10. Be disassociated from any form of punishing students or means of securing discipline.

At Shelley Primary School we believe that parents form a crucial component of the three-way partnership that maximises student learning and enhances the school experience. Building a positive relationship between home and school plays an important role in the education of your child.

Parents should be comfortable contacting all staff members and should feel that they are being listened to and that their concerns are being addressed in a timely and professional manner. At Shelley Primary School we are committed to responding promptly and helpfully to your enquiries, concerns, suggestions and compliments.

Our school uses various forms of electronic communications to parents. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the forms of communication and their uses. These guidelines outline the methods of communication that Shelley Primary School expects all staff to use when communicating with parents. It also outlines the appropriate and effective methods available for parents to communicate with the school.

Dress codes for students in public schools are determined by school boards and councils in consultation with students, their parents and staff of the school.

Shelley’s dress code supports all students to participate fully in school life. The Dress code can help create a sense of identity and a school culture in which every student experiences a sense of belonging. For more information on the school’s Dress code please click the link below.

Background
Skin damage, including skin cancer, is the result of cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) from
the sun. UV damage begins to accumulate during childhood and adolescence and is associated with an
increased risk of skin cancer later in life. As students and staff are at school during times of peak UV
radiation, schools play a major role in providing an environment that minimises exposure and encourages
long-term sun protective behaviours.

Aim
Our Sun Protection Policy has been developed to ensure that all students, staff, parents and visitors
attending Shelley PS are protected from skin damage caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from
the sun.

Implementation
This policy is to be implemented when the forecast average monthly UV Index in our area is 3 or above
(available from www.bom.gov.au). Throughout Western Australia, UV levels reach 3 or above during all
school terms. The sun protection practices outlined in this policy will be applied to all school activities,
including sports carnivals, excursions and camps. Provisions will be made for students who do not have
adequate sun protective clothing or hats and these students will not be excluded from play or physical
activity, though activities may be restricted to shaded areas.

Students make a PA announcement daily, informing us of UV ratings and the need to wear sunscreen and hats.
