From the Principal

Welcome back to another year of opportunity and excellence at Shelley Primary School.
Declining newsletter readership and feedback from the community has led us to pursue a different course of communications. We have recently started a Facebook page and will be releasing some videos on YouTube soon. More details in the coming weeks.

50th Anniversary Celebrations

We are celebrating 50 years of Shelley Primary School this year. The school started in 1975 and has grown enormously over the recent past.
We will hold an open afternoon and evening in November. Meanwhile, if you have any memorabilia that you would be prepared to loan or donate in support of our anniversary celebrations, please contact shelley.ps@education.wa.edu.au

P&C

At Shelley Primary School we have an outstanding P&C. They contribute so much to our school. Just look at the new early childhood centre playground and our fantastic canteen. Recently, our Year 6 families ran a very successful sausage sizzle and cake stall at the state election. In May we have a federal election, we would love to see more Year 6 families helping.

NAPLAN

This year NAPLAN testing starts on Wednesday 12th March and continues until Friday 21st March. Because we have such a supportive community, our students are generally better prepared than most and we have high expectations once again. Over recent years, Shelley Primary School students have generally performed at a higher level than students from statistically similar schools – a testament to the high standards maintained at our school.

Student Attendance

Every day that a student does not attend school can have a negative impact on their learning. We know that student progress slows or stops once their attendance falls below 90% of days. We will not authorise student absence of more than 10% of school days in any term unless there are medical or other extraordinary circumstances.
That does not mean that you can’t take your child away on a holiday. We know the importance of family connections and how difficult that is when the family is overseas. It does mean that extended absences for family holidays will be recorded as unauthorised in accordance with Education Department guidelines.

Family Court

Parents and carers are reminded that school staff support families where there are court orders in place. For us to be effective, we need to have a copy of the relevant court orders.
Please remember our priority is to support the child, not to intervene with parents. We do not enforce court orders.

Epilepsy Purple Day

On Friday, 28th of March, we are inviting students to wear purple to raise awareness for Epilepsy, which is a condition that impacts many families, including some in the Shelley community. Please bring along a gold coin or a purple $5 note, which will be donated to Epilepsy WA so that they can continue to support families. It doesn’t need to be a full outfit (I know for WCE supporters, this is a big ask!); socks or a hair decoration is fine – of course, if you want to go purple-crazy, feel free! The Student Councillors are also keen to collect any silver coins you have laying around and will be running some competitions.
