From the Principal
Another amazing book week has come and gone. I think this was the best one I’ve seen. The support from families and the activities devised by staff ensured our students had an amazing day. More information and photos are elsewhere in this issue.
CHOIR NEWS
In some very exciting news for our choir, we have been selected to perform on Telethon! The choir will be filmed by a Channel 7 TV crew on the 9th of October from 10-11am. More information will follow soon. Congratulations and thanks to Mr Lim for his efforts in providing our students with such an incredible opportunity.
FACTION ATHLETICS
Activities for our annual athletics carnival commenced on Wednesday with the first round of a new fun event – the Tug o’ War.
The first round saw our year 5&6 boys Geckos defeat the Quokkas. Then the Dingos defeated the Emus in an epic contest that went back and forward several times. In the 5/6 girls’ event, Quokkas defeated Emus and then the Geckos proved too strong for the Dingos. The winning teams will go into the grand finals on Carnival Day. The losing teams play off for third place on Jumps day – weather permitting.
The Year 3/4 boys and girls get their turn next week. However, as we need dry grass to hold this event, we can’t tell in advance exactly when it will be happening.
STEM Professionals in School Partnership
We are very pleased to be a participant in this partnership that is sponsored by CSIRO. We have a data scientist (a recently retired software developer with a mathematics and computer science background ) work with our students on Friday mornings to support our STEM program. Another tremendous opportunity for our students.
Year 6 Transition
Rossmoyne Senior High School’s second transition visit for the 2025 cohort Rossmoyne Senior High School has organised the 2025 Year 7 cohort’s second transition visit to Shelley Primary School: Wednesday, 4 September, 9 – 10 am.
Students attending RSHS in 2025 will meet in Room 11 for the presentation.
WA Languages Week.
Recently, some of our students experienced a German cooking class. They made Brezel out of cookie dough. As it was languages Week in WA, students were exposed to words and phrases in different languages, learnt about different cultures and thought about reasons for learning another language.
In German pretzels are called Brezel. Look out for photos and comments from some students elsewhere in this issue.

WA Language Week
In week 4, we Celebrated WA Languages Week.
We made Brezel out of cookie dough, tried to say words in different languages, learnt about different cultures and thought about reasons for learning another language.
Here are some comments from some students.
Last week, we had languages week, and for that, we all made pretzels and a bookmark it was so fun I hope to do it again. Alyia- Room 9
Last week, we made cookie dough pretzels for Language Week. Everyone made one, and we also made bookmarks. After lunch, we got to eat them, and it tasted so good. Prakasham -Room 9
During Languages Week, Year 6 students had a fun and tasty experience! We went into the staff room and made sweet, flavoured cookie pretzels. While we waited for them to bake, we created bookmarks. It is important to learn different languages because you get to understand other cultures better, communicate with people from different parts of the world, and experience their food and traditions.
In Germany, pretzels are often eaten during festivals like Oktoberfest and are a symbol of good luck. Germans have been making pretzels for centuries, and the twist shape is said to represent arms folded in prayer.
When the pretzels were ready, they tasted absolutely delicious! Overall, it was a fantastic Languages Week, and we learned a lot while having fun. Charlotte and Harry – Room 11

During Languages Week, years 3-6 made Brezel with Frau Colgan. Frau Colgan made Brezel dough for us to turn into Bretzel! We rolled the dough in flour and made it into a Bretzel. While we were waiting for the Bretzel to cook, we investigated flags from other countries. The Brezels tasted nice, and everyone enjoyed making them. It was a fun thing to do at school! Nate, Kate, and Stella, Room 7
I enjoyed baking very much, and I loved making the pretzels. When they came out of the oven, they were steaming hot, and they looked spectacular. The pretzels smelt so yummy. When I got some, it was amazing to eat. It was fun to make the pretzels during Languages Week. Hana Room 7
