From the Principal

Welcome back to another term of opportunity at Shelley Primary School.

As a modern and highly successful school, we try to offer a range of supplementary curriculum to support a diverse range of student interests and abilities. We have a series of tremendous opportunities for students this term. Supplemental programs on offer this term include:

  • For the STEM enthusiasts, our Digital Technology team are holding a Video Game Design competition on Fridays in the STEM Lab;
  • For those who love reading (like me) the Scholastic book fair is on again from May 14th
  • Swimming lessons kick off on June 4th
  • For the sports people among us, the Winter Carnival is scheduled for Friday 21st

Parents and carers are reminded that they must sign in at the front office if they come on school grounds outside of pick up and drop off times.

ANZAC Day

Our student leaders presented a very respectful and dignified Anzac Day assembly on Wednesday afternoon. They highlighted the sacrifice of those who fell and those who came home, from places as diverse as the valleys and ridges of Gallipoli, the fields of Belgium and France, through to the sands of the North African desert and the mountains and olive groves of Greece, Crete and Syria.

They encouraged us to remember those who suffered as prisoners of war and those who are still missing and those who served as peacekeepers in troubled countries all over the world.

Australia has had peacekeepers in the field with the United Nations since 1947. In Indonesia in 1947, Australians were part of the very first group of UN military observers anywhere in the world, and were, in fact, the first into the field.

Anzac Day is a day when we remember the sacrifices and contributions made by those who have served Australia throughout history and continue to do so today. Remembering the sacrifices of those who served and finding moments of peace and forgiveness are essential aspects of Anzac Day.

Lest we forget.

ADHD Support

Staff participated in the first of a series of three professional learning seminars on supporting students with ADHD on Monday 15th April.

A parent workshop on supporting children with ADHD will be held on May 6th. In these sessions, the focus will be on empowering parents with knowledge and understanding of ADHD behaviours. By increasing our ADHD knowledge, we can then develop strategies to support all family members.

Traffic Issues

Last year we had some complaints from residents about cars blocking their driveways in the afternoons. We encourage older students to walk or ride to school if they can; it is better for their health and improves the traffic flow.

Our new bike shelter is finished. We encourage students to ride, scoot or walk to school over the rest of the term as the weather begins to cool down.

Kind Regards

Trevor Phoebe – Principal

ANZAC Day Ceremony

Each year, Shelley Primary School holds an ANZAC Day Ceremony. We take immense pride in this ceremony, which is a testament to our respect for the past and present ANZACs. Our Student Leaders conducted this service. They read odes and poems and laid wreaths. The school sang songs, and our School Ambassadors raised the flag. A special thank you to our wonderful Year One students, who each brought in a flower for the wreaths.

As we lay the wreaths in our newly renovated ANZAC Memorial Seating, we would like to recognise the tremendous effort of Mrs Pettit and our Gardeners, Simon and Ruth, to make it truly magnificent. Their dedication and hard work made this space a fitting tribute to our fallen, veteran and serving soldiers.
