From the Principal
Shelley Primary School’s Faction Cross Country took place on Friday, 26 July 2024. It was a wonderful day, and it was nice to see many families come and cheer on our students.
Dingo-Gold faction was the winner, followed by Gecko-Green, Emu-Blue and Quokka-Red factions. Congratulations to the Dingo-Gold faction – our 2024 Cross Country Champions!
Our next faction event will be the field events on Tuesday, the 3rd of September.
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL WELLBEING
Over the last three years, we have surveyed our year two to six cohorts about their social/emotional well-being (SEW). There are numerous areas where we continue to produce data that is better than the Australian mean score. For example, over the last three years, Shelley students generally felt considerably better about themselves in comparison to peers across the country in the following areas;
• I get along well with my teacher.
• I like being at school.
• I am sometimes mean to other people.
• I can behave well and follow rules.
• I try hard not to say or do things that hurt other people’s feelings.
• I think someone who treats me unfairly is a bad person and that it is okay to hurt them back.
• I think it is important to treat all people with respect.
• When I do not understand something, I give up easily.
• I could do a lot better in my schoolwork.
There are, of course, some areas of student social/emotional wellbeing where students are reporting being significantly worse off than the Australian mean score and will need some extra coaching. Those areas have become a focus of our RISE program. Some of the areas we have identified across several cohorts include:
• I have lots of energy for everything I do at school
• I talk to someone when I feel bad
• I feel lonely
Staff will work explicitly on those areas to build up student strategies and understandings.

Student’s use of devices
We have had a number of incidents this week involving student’s use of devices. The activity has occurred away from school, but the effects spill over into what is happening at school, affecting students socially and emotionally. The specific incidents causing issues this week involve inappropriate and nasty messages being sent between students; and students promising gifts and assistance to other students in the Fortnite game and using these gifts to manipulate others. We would like parents to be aware of these kinds of activities. Some tips could involve ensuring that you have full access to the apps and platforms your children are using and monitoring and restricting the use of devices to certain locations in the home and times of day.
