From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers
We have had a terrific start to the year. Earlier this term, our student councillors helped me develop a year 5/6 survey so that staff could better understand potential causes of student anxiety. One of the items identified was interaction with duty teachers.
Over the last couple of weeks I have been working with the councillors on ways to help students with this problem, They presented their ideas at the recent Year 5 assembly. Their messages about clarity, politeness, owning your actions and looking for solutions were very well received and indicative of a very mature and thoughtful group of councillors.
We have selection processes for all student leadership positions. We are very clear in sharing the process with students prior to the process commencing. We also review those processes regularly to ensure they fit our circumstances. With the growing student population, we are looking at expanding the leadership positions available.
Which brings me to the issue of students who did not get selected for leadership positions. While the students who missed out handled it very well, many families did not. Accepting that decisions do not always go your way is an important life lesson for students as they grow and develop. I thank those families who modelled how to receive disappointing news with grace, thus supporting the development of resilience.
Building and Grounds
We continue to experience electricity supply issues in B Block. We have been proactive in contacting the appropriate maintenance personnel for support. This morning I received news that a consultant has been arranged to undertake a power audit with data logging to identify the cause/s of the issue and map out a solution.
Meanwhile we have made plans to ensure there are no blackouts during the NAPLAN testing by relocating some classes not involved in NAPLAN during the testing periods.
I have also been able to negotiate a fire exit to be installed in our Library. While our library appears to be compliant with building codes, it has only one entry/exit. I haven’t received a timeline yet, however, an engineer will be onsite next week to plan the best location for a fire escape.
We have also been advised that the Solar Panel installation will commence on the 10th of April, during the upcoming school holidays.
Bike Shed
Thanks to the generous support of our P&C, we have a new bike shed. This is an important addition to our school as it serves two functions:
- It enables students who arrive and leave from the front gate to park their bikes without having to go past our very busy car parks; and
- It encourages students to ride or scoot to school which is healthier for them and reduces congestion the car parks.
We are encouraging students to park large bikes at the back of the shed.
Kind Regards
Trevor Phoebe

Technology Contributions
The Western Australian curriculum requires students to learn to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas. Shelley Primary School have invested heavily in computers, laptops and iPads for student use which have a range of student friendly software installed. Our programs such as; Bug Club Reading, Literacy Pro and Mathletics can all be accessed at home by students to support the consolidation of learning at school. To assist with purchasing apps and device management programs, we request a $30 contribution per student in Years PP – 6 and $15 for Kindy. The Shelley Primary School Board has approved this.
You can easily make this contribution using the Qkr app.
