Newsletter – 9 February 2024

From the Principal,

Welcome back to another year of opportunity at Shelley Primary School. Despite the heatwave, we have hit the ground running with the highest enrolment ever at Shelley – more than 450 students.  This reflects our status as a school of choice.

Commendation from the Director General and the Minister for Education

Our school’s ongoing focus on every student achieving growth in their learning, with the implementation of quality teaching practices that result in students acquiring the foundational skills they need for future success, has been recognised by both the Director General of the Education Department, Lisa Rodgers, and the Minister for Education, Dr Tony Buti.

Ms Rodgers stated, ‘Based on 2023 NAPLAN results in reading writing and numeracy, I would like to commend Shelley Primary School on the performance of your primary students.’

We also received a signed certificate from the Minister (see below).

Heat Wave

We have made a number of adjustments to our normal procedures to support student wellbeing during the current extreme heat. Once the temperature exceeds 37° we make a number of changes including:

  • Physical Education classes are undercover and involve passive (non-running) activities;
  • Oval and basketball court play is cancelled. The library is open during breaks;
  • If it is a Friday, sport is cancelled;
  • External blinds are closed except those essential for ventilation;
  • Water bottles are kept in the classroom; and
  • Other measures as directed by school leaders.

P&C

At Shelley Primary School we have an outstanding P&C. They contribute so much to our school. Just look at the amazing Monkey Bars that we have and our fantastic canteen. Our P&C are holding a Family Fun Night on Friday 16th February. Please come along and support our school.

NAPLAN

As most of you are aware, NAPLAN testing has been moved to March. This year testing starts on Wednesday 13th March and continues until Monday 25th March. Because we have such a supportive community, our students are generally better prepared than most and we have high expectations once again. Over the last two years, our students have performed at a higher level than students from statistically similar schools – a testament to the high standards maintained at Shelley.

Family Court

Parents and carers are reminded that school staff support families where there are court orders in place, but we do not enforce court orders. Our priority is to support the child, not to intervene with parents.

Kind Regards

Trevor Phoebe – Principal

Volunteers Health & Safety Induction

From Term 1 2024, contractors, therapists, and volunteers must complete a health and safety induction on the first day they visit the school. This takes 5-10 minutes and can be completed on the iPad in the Admin Office or online.

For the purpose of the induction parents and caregivers helping in the canteen, classroom, sports carnival, special days (eg Diwali) and library are considered volunteers and are required to complete the induction. If you are visiting the school to pick up/drop off your child, meet with your child’s teacher or attend an assembly you are not considered a volunteer.

From the date of first completion, they will need to complete the induction again in 12 months, and then every following 12 months.

Please contact Deb Pettit, Manager Corporate Services on 9235 1450 or deb.pettit@education.wa.edu.au if you have any questions regarding these inductions or would prefer to complete the induction online at home.

Parent and Child Volunteer Declaration Form

In addition to the health and safety induction, all volunteers should attend the Admin Office to complete a Parent and Child Declaration Form. This should be completed annually. Other visitors to the school (eg Grandparents volunteering) must hold a valid working with children check.

Thank you for helping keep our children safe!

Contributions and Charges

Thank you to the parents who have paid for your children’s Voluntary Contributions through West School Supplies and Qkr Online Payment. We greatly appreciate your support.

The Shelley Primary School Board has endorsed an amount of $60.00 per student for Voluntary Contributions for 2024. This equates to approximately $1.50 per week. These costs enhance the teaching and learning opportunities for all students and supplement funding gained from other sources, including the State and Federal government

You can pay this contribution using the Qkr! app.

Voluntary Technology Contributions

The Western Australian curriculum requires students to learn to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas. Shelley Primary School have invested heavily in computers, laptops and iPads for student use which have a range of student friendly software installed. Our programs such as; Bug Club Reading, Literacy Pro and Mathletics can all be accessed at home by students to support the consolidation of learning at school. To assist with purchasing apps and device management programs, we request a $30 contribution per student in Years PP – 6 and $15 for Kindy. The Shelley Primary School Board has approved this.

You can easily make this contribution using the Qkr app.

New School Siren and Session Times

This year school concludes at 2:55pm every day!

Second-Hand Uniform Shop

The second-hand uniform shop, which is located next to the canteen and run by our student councillors, will be back in business in a couple of weeks. All proceeds raised through the sale of second-hand uniforms go towards the Year 6 gift for the school.

We have a great selection of second-hand uniforms in good condition, which are available for a $2 donation.

The shop will be open every Friday during school term from 8:30am to 8:45am.

If you have any uniforms that your children no longer require, we kindly request that you consider donating them back to the school. Please drop off any donations at the administration office. Please ensure that all clothing is washed and in good condition.

Thank you for supporting this initiative!

Canteen in need of Volunteers

Our P & C is constantly in need of volunteers to keep the canteen running. If you would like to volunteer to help out please contact us at shelleycanteen@gmail.com

The WA Health Department has recently made it mandatory for everyone who works in a school canteen to complete the following two online courses, both are free and do not need to be completed all in one go.

The Food Safe Online course can be found here: https://www.ehawa.org.au/events/category/foodsafe-online-43 Use the code FSCANNI350 on the payment details screen, for free access.

The second course, All About Allergens is the first course on this site, it can be found here: https://foodallergytraining.org.au

Please print the certificates and deliver to the canteen or email to us at shelleycanteen@gmail.com.

We appreciate parents and caretakers taking the time to do these courses to continue supporting our canteen.

Thank you and kind regards,

Karolina & Vicky
