From the Principal
We held our annual athletics carnival last Friday, and despite the weather, we had another very successful event. Congratulations to Gold faction on their massive win. There are pictures elsewhere in this issue.
Attendance
Last week I reported to the board about the attendance of our students and how that affects NAPLAN results. We spent time analysing the results and discussing the impact of attendance on student performance. We also looked at some research that was released by the University of Western Australia from data collected on WA schools in 2014.
The message of that research is that student absence makes a significant difference to their performance both now and into the future. ‘The broad message from these early analyses is that there is a dose-response relationship between school attendance and academic performance: every day counts…’ Zubrick, SR 2014
The research demonstrates that student attendance is highly predictable and tends to remain constant from the early years of schooling. Zubrick found that the pattern of attendance that a student achieves in Year 1 is highly likely to continue throughout the years at school. Students who attend regularly in Year 1 tend to attend regularly every year.
The research also showed how the effects of absence also accumulate over time. Periods of absence from school affected academic achievement in numeracy, reading and writing not only in the current year, but in future years as well. The effect was noticed in our NAPLAN data. Attendance of our current Year 3 and 5 cohorts was lower than other cohorts in 2023. This absence had a negative effect on their 2024 NAPLAN data.
Reporting Processes
You may have read that the Education Department is encouraging schools to review reporting processes. We discussed that recently at a staff meeting and then it was raised at the board meeting. Our staff will commence a review of our reporting and assessment procedures at our next staff meeting with a view to clarifying our school’s procedures for the next few years.
If we identify improvements to our current approach, we will seek input from families at an appropriate time. I thank you for your ongoing support of our school.
Student Selection
Next term, we will start our processes for selecting the 2025 student leaders from the 2024 Year 5 cohort. We have recently reviewed our selection processes, with both staff and the board, to ensure we meet the needs of our community. If you would like to give feedback to the board on how we select students for leadership positions, please contact a board member or email us here: Shelley.PS.Board@education.wa.edu.au

2024 Jumps and Throws
The jumps and throws were held on Tuesday and ran smoothly! Selected students from years 3-6 participated. The factions competed in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, Vortex Throws, and 400/800m running race to earn points towards the Faction Athletics Carnival results.
Well done to all our students!
