From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers
The weather has finally begun to change. As we get closer to the cold and flu season, we remind parents and carers that hand washing becomes even more important. If your child is sick, please keep them at home. In confined spaces like classrooms, germs spread very quickly.
Preliminary NAPLAN
Data was released on Friday 26th April. While we have no comparative data, we can say with some confidence that our students performed well. Some notable points include:
- All 63 Year 5 students (and all but 2 of the 62 Year 3 students) at or above year level expectation in Numeracy.
- All but one Year 5 student (and all but 6 Year 3 students) at or above year level expectation in Reading.
- Numeracy was, again, the strongest area followed by Grammar and Punctuation.
SCHOOL-DEVELOPED PROGRAMS
We continue to see great progress in student performance through use of two school-developed diagnostic programs – Grammar Check and Maths Magicians.
In our most recent Maths Magicians round of diagnostic testing, we identified doubling and addition as being strengths across the school. Subtraction has been highlighted as a weakness across years 1 – 4. Our teachers will focus on that skill over the next few weeks.
In the Grammar Check, we have seen strong growth in the correct identification and use of punctuation marks, and steady improvement in the usage of verbs, nouns and adjectives. Prefixes and suffixes have been identified as an area for our teachers to focus on.
The success of these programs is evidenced by the strength of our NAPLAN data in these areas.
STUDENT DRESS CODE
Parents are reminded that school uniform is compulsory in WA public schools. Our community is generally very supportive. However, recently we have noticed some coloured jackets and tights being worn by some students. Please support our school dress code by wearing appropriate items as described here: https://shelleyps.wa.edu.au/uniforms/
The second-hand uniform shop is located next to the Canteen and is open from 8:15 to 8:45am on Fridays.
BUILDING AND GROUNDS IMPROVEMENTS

We continue to work hard to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. We are getting closer to resolving one of our ongoing issues – internet connectivity for our senior students. In referring the issue to the ICT operations directorate, we were informed that the senior block connects to the outside world via one copper cable. Obviously, that is not ideal. We have had a contractor onsite to install optic fibre to improve connectivity. The work is likely to go into next week, but the outcome will be significantly better connectivity for our senior students.
Another seat was installed outside A Block for the junior students. That was donated by Rotary Willetton. Simon and some Rotary members installed the bench on Thursday 2nd May. We are very grateful to Rotary for their generosity.
The installation of the solar panels was completed during the recent school holidays. We will report back to the community on the impact of that installation on finances and electricity usage once we have comparative data.
Kind Regards
Trevor Phoebe | Principal

Technology Contributions
The Western Australian curriculum requires students to learn to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas. Shelley Primary School have invested heavily in computers, laptops and iPads for student use, which have a range of student-friendly software installed. Our programs such as; Bug Club Reading, Literacy Pro and Mathletics, can all be accessed at home by students to support the consolidation of learning at school. To assist with purchasing apps and device management programs, we request a $30 contribution per student in Years PP – 6 and $15 for Kindy. The Shelley Primary School Board has approved this.
You can easily make this contribution using the Qkr app.
